The Standing Liberty Quarter was mint from 1916 to 1930, making it among the shortest mint runs. There are three main varieties. The first is the Standing Liberty Quarter in 1916 and 1917, bare breast, which has no stars under the eagle on the reverse. Hint, this is a good way to indentify coins without dates as belonging to this variety.

As a result of public outcry, the Standing Liberty Quarter was covered up in 1917 with chain mail. The date remained on the pedestal and wore quickly. This is why it can be hard to read dates on early Standing Liberty Quarters. The date was recessed on the third variety starting with the 1925 mintage. Recessed date Standing Liberty Quarters are easier for rare coin collectors to identify.
