Coin collecting is known as the "Hobby of Kings." This title exists because the first coin collectors were, in fact, kings. Kings would create a "proof" coin as a fine example of the coinage they were producing. These limited edition proofs would be distributed to the various government agencies and other kings so that all would know what a certain kingdoms coins would looks like. Keep in mind this was in Greek and Roman times long before wikipedia came around. In this manner, someone from another kingdom could compare a coin being tendered with a proof of what this coin should be.

Fortunately for us, we do not have to be regents of Asia Minor to get proof coins today. The U.S. Mint creates a proof set every year with one example of each coin struck for circulation. They package them in attractive boxes and we make them available to you. Snap up yours today. And, if you want to get some of the older proof sets, go to our Proof Sets page.

The 2011 U.s. Proof Set contains 14 specially minted proof coins. It includes one each of the four Presidential Dollars, one each of the five American the Beautiful National Parks Quarters, and one each of the Lincoln Shield cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Sacagawea Dollar.
