The Matron Head Large Cent design replaced the Classic Head design in 1816. With the exception of the  1821 and 1823 mintage, rare coin collectors can obtain nice mid-grade examples fairly readily. Large cents that grade About Uncirculated and better command substantial premiums and can not always be obtained. As rare coin dealers, our advice is to buy better examples of the Matron Head Large Cent when you see them. They do not always come on the market and choice examples are rapidly acquired by collectors.

In 1837 the design was modified and is often referred to as the Matron Head Modified (1837-39). Like other large cent type coins, there are a lot of varieties that can be affordably collected. Over dates, repunched dates, and large and small date and letter combinations abound in this series.
