Liberty Nickels
In 1883, the nickel design was changed to the Liberty Headdesign. In the first year, 1883, the design appeared without the words centson the reverse. This led some clever counterfeiters to gold plate the nickel and pass it off as a new $5 coin. Later in the year, the 1883 reverse die was amended to include centson the reverse. As a result, the 1883 is collected in both reverse die varieties. The 1913 Liberty Nickel is especially rare, as only 5 were ever minted and were never intended to circulate. The most recent public trade of a genuine 1913 was $3.72 million in January 2010. Check your pocket change.... |
