Starting in 1840, silver dollars were issued for commercial circulation. The Liberty Seated Dollar was minted from 1840 until 1873. The design of the Liberty Seated Dollar was produced by Christian Gobrecht, a fairly famous mint engraver. All of the silver dollar coins from this series are rare except for the 1860-O and 1869 - 1872 Philadelphia mint issues. Rare coin type collectors will be able to obtain better specimens from these years. Lower grade circulated examples are usually available from the scarcer mintages. However, date and mintmark collectors will pay substantial premiums for Liberty Seated Dollars in about uncirculated condition and better.
