The Liberty Head Nickel was first minted in 1883 without the word "cents" on the reverse. Clever racketeers gold plated the Liberty Head Nickel from 1883 and passed it off as the new $5 gold coin. The United States Mint quickly made changes to the reverse design. Rare coin collectors can collect both the "without cents" variety and the "with cents" variety of the Liberty Head Nickel.

Liberty Head Nickels are available to rare coin collectos are proof specimens and as circulated and uncirculated coins. Many years are available in uncirculated grades in certified holders by PCGS and NGC. The 1885, 1886, and 1912-S are the three rarest date Liberty Head Nickels.
