The Liberty Cap Half Cent, Head Facing Left was minted only in 1793, with little more than 35,000 half cents struck. It was followed by a different type coin, the 1794 Liberty Cap, Head Facing Right. The 1794 half cent through the 1797 half cents generally have a mintage of about 100,000. The 1796 Liberty Cap Half Cent is the key to the series as only 1,390 were minted. To make things more challenging for today's rare coin collectors, there is both a pole and no pole variety, with the no pole variety being the rarer of the two. While all of these half cents are rare, any in very fine condition or better are conditionally rare and command substantial premiums.
