The Jefferson Nickel has been minted since 1938 and continues today. Felix Schlag's design for Jefferson won an artist's competition for the design of the nickel. Aside from varieties and error coins, there are no rare or key dates. Jefferson Nickels are available to coin collectors in uncirculated and proof condition.

From 1942 to 1945, the nickel was removed from the nickel ;) It was replaced by silver and the reverse design was changed by adding a large mint mark over Monticello, even for Philadelphia Mint coins. The nickel was needed for the World War II war effort so these became known as "War Nickels".
