The Draped Bust Quarter was the first quarter authorized to be minted by Congress. The quarter is the only denomination that is not on the decimal system, but rather is a holdover from the British system. It lines up with two bits, or two pieces of eight from the highly circulated Spanish Pillar Dollar.

The 1796 Draped Bust Quarter is a rare coin and collectors will have to be patient to obtain examples. Only 6,146 Draoed Bust Small Eagle Revere quarters were minted that year and five figure prices aren't uncommon.

The quarter was reintroduced in 1804 with a modified design, the Draped Bust Quarter, Heraldic Eagle Reverse. The 1804 is also a rare coin with only 6,738 quarters issued. Type coin collectors will have more opportunity to add the 1805, 1806, or 1807 Draped Bust Quarters to their collection. Mintages in those years vaired from 120,000 to 220,000 quarters. Circulated examples are available, but Draped Bust Quarters in extra fine condition or higher are very rare coins.
