The Draped Bust Dime was the first dime variety minted by the United States. In 1796 and 1797 the Draped Bust Dime was issued with the small eagle reverse. The 1797 includes both a 13 stars and 16 stars variety. The 13 stars variety represented the original 13 colonies, while the 16 stars variety represented the number of states in the union in 1797.

In 1798, the Draped Bust Dime was changed to the Heraldic Eagle Reverse through 1807. Mintages of the 1805 and 1807 Draped Bust Dime are relatively high, exceeding 100,000 dimes each year. Earlier Heralding Eagle Reverse dimes are rare.
