The Classic Head Large Cent is a short series spanning just seven years from 1808 to 1814. Designed by John Reich, the large cent was struck on purer copper planchets than other series. As a result, the sharpness and quality of these coins is lower than other series. Despite being minted in reasonably high quantity for its day, from 200,000 to over a million cents, rare coin collectors have difficulty finding choice high grade examples as few are sharply struck. All of the Classic Head Large Cents are readily available in lower, circulated condition, but become exceedingly scarce in better than Extra Fine condition.
