The Indian Head, or Buffalo Nickel, is the most popular five cent coin among rare coin collectors. James Earle Fraser's high relief design of the native american on the obverse and the buffalo standing on the reverse are iconic images of the American West. The Buffalo Nickel was first minted in 1913 at a time when the American West had been tamed and the public was nostalgic for this bygone era.

The Buffalo Nickel was minted from 1913 to 1938. Many of the earlier coins from branch mints are rare in high grade. Rare coin collectors and type collectors can add many examples to their coin collections in uncirculated condition. Completing the series in uncirculated condition will be a challenge and require patience.
