Starting in 1839, the design of the large cent was changed to the Braided Hair Cent, sometimes referred to as the Coronet Cent. The coin was minted continuously from 1839 through 1857. Mid grade examples can be obtained by coin collectors in every year at reasonable prices. Many uncirculated examples exist as certified coins in PCGS or NGC holders. The mintages of most of these large cents exceeds 2 million cents each year.

There is a great deal of fun to be had collecting large cent varieties. The production methods were crude by todays minting standards and many variations exist including over dates, repunched dates, and large and small date and letter varieties. As rare coin dealers. we do not really have the time to search all of our coins for obscure varieties so, Happy Hunting!
